German Steel Helmet

 

This helmet was found in 2009(!) during the 65th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. It lay up in the hills above Omaha beach, half a mile from the beach. You can still see the lines of the embankments and trench fortifications. It's very overgrown now and only the barbed wire scewers are still there. In the heavy bushes there was a stream and to the edge of the stream was the helmet, crown down and not visable without the aid of a metaldetector. The crown of the helmet has been corroded away completely because it had been in water for 65 years!

Although 1000's of people must have visit the area after the war, apperently there is still a lot of memorabilia out there....
